Heat anxiety can be a common fear for those with anxiety, and even for those who don't typically experience anxiety. When the temperature rises, many of us feel overwhelmed—dizzy, racing thoughts, and an increased heart rate. If this sounds familiar, you're not alone. In this post, I’ll share helpful tips for overcoming heat anxiety and how to manage those anxious feelings that arise when the weather gets warm.
My Personal Experience with Heat Anxiety
As a child, I was always sensitive to heat. I had a frightening experience when I was about six years old while camping with my family. After playing in the water and spending time in the sun, I passed out—likely from heatstroke. Looking back, it was terrifying, especially at a young age. This experience, and many others, made me especially anxious in hot weather.
Years later, when I worked in healthcare, I heard a colleague mention, “It’s really hot in here. I get anxious when I’m hot, so I’m going to open the door.” Hearing her speak openly about heat anxiety was a turning point for me—it showed me I wasn’t crazy or alone. If you’ve ever struggled with heat anxiety, know that you’re not alone, and it’s something that can be managed.

Tips for Relieving Heat Anxiety
1. Heat Can Mimic Anxiety Symptoms
When it’s hot outside, the physical sensations of heat can trigger many of the same feelings we experience during anxiety—dizziness, shortness of breath, and a racing heart. I used to avoid places that made me feel hot and trapped, but I didn’t realize that simply being hot can create these physical symptoms.
It’s completely normal to feel uncomfortable when it's warm, and it’s understandable to want to avoid the sensation. Recognize that these feelings don’t mean something is wrong with you—they’re just the body’s natural response to heat, and they can be managed.
2. The Fear of Passing Out Isn’t the Worst-Case Scenario
When we feel hot, we might worry that we’ll pass out. The good news? It’s extremely unlikely! During moments of anxiety, our heart rate increases as part of the fight or flight response, which actually prevents us from passing out. The real fear is about feeling uncomfortable—and that’s okay!
Instead of fearing the worst-case scenario, focus on how you can handle the discomfort. This shift in mindset can help you reduce the anxiety associated with heat.
3. You CAN Handle the Discomfort
It's important to remember that feelings are just feelings. How we respond to them determines whether they persist. In my Panic to Peace program, I teach the power of changing our relationship with anxiety. When we resist feelings of discomfort, we inadvertently make them worse.
It’s okay to be sensitive to the discomfort heat brings, but you can choose to respond with acceptance and calm. By allowing yourself to feel the discomfort without panicking, you’ll be better equipped to handle future heat anxiety. Practice slowing down during moments of anxiety and remind yourself that feeling uncomfortable doesn't mean you're in danger.
4. Take Care of Your Body During the Summer
As the temperature rises, staying hydrated is crucial in managing heat anxiety. Warm weather can trigger anxiety, but staying hydrated and practicing calming techniques can help you feel more in control. Use this as an opportunity to build awareness around your body’s sensations and how you respond to anxiety, especially in the summer months.
Remember, discomfort is temporary. You can handle it, and you're capable of overcoming heat anxiety.
